services for independent business owners

Helping creative and independent businesses run a little smoother.

Common Cases

1. Repositioning
Any independent business that's keeping up with its customers will make several pivots over its lifetime. Repositioning is normal, but it's tricky. There are associations already made, expectations in place. Receive support navigating these waters for your business.
2. Streamlining processes
Large companies have budgets to spend on process. They hire Chief Operations Officers, pay them handy salaries, all to focus on 'how things get done efficiently'. As an IBO, it's up to you, and often process gets swept aside for later. Take a moment to streamline.
3. New product or service launch
Introducing a new product or service is exciting. The truth is, though, you're never sure how it will pan out. Will existing customers show up? How will you find new ones? Develop a plan for your next launch.
4. Defining a tool stack and workflows
This decade will be defined by the numerous tools available to business owners and how they put them to use. Get your tool stack in order and start saving yourself time and money.
5. From freelance to business
This is one of most common mindset shifts I work with. It's a big moment. When you decide to move from chaotic gigs to steady processes, accountable targets and reputation-building. Receive guidance on putting processes in place to make the shift.
6. Ongoing advisory support
After any initial project, I always offer a retainer service for continued support and advice where it's useful. Unfortunately, I don't offer this unless I'm already familiar with your business--i.e. after we've already worked together for some time.

We'll work to the same three areas of business that guide the Independent Business OS

Purpose
Set clear objectives, define your mission & vision, design an actionable roadmap and set the direction for your business with confidence.

Actions
How will we act on our purpose? Key projects, campaigns, tasks and to-dos. Develop systems for keeping track, scheduling and automating wherever possible.
Outcomes
What actually happened? Keeping track of campaigns, performance analytics and efforts can be difficult without the right systems already in place. Fortunately, once built they last for years.

About me

Beyond 6 months as Chief Marketing Officer with a London-based virtual communities startup, Tevent, I've been an independent professional my whole career.

The challenges of building, growing and sustaining an independent business are unique. Over the last several years, I've actively sought out conversations with independent business owners, creators, artists, makers and entrepreneurs of all walks—to better understand what makes them tick, what works, what lasts and what doesn't.

People who are building passionately make this world interesting. Wherever I can, I want to help make these efforts more effective and rigorous; to give unique attention to each business' problem, then help them grow, sustain or transition as best suits their needs.

When not working with creators and independent business owners, I lead our small distributed team here at Landmark Labs, building tools to help the next generation of independent business owners & makers.

FAQs

Do you work with small businesses or only independents?

Chevron
I prefer to work with independent business owners, many of whom hire part-time or freelance workers to help run aspects of the business. If you're a small business owner or early stage startup, then feel free to get in touch.

Which business areas are covered in a typical project?

Chevron
We will always discuss: Business model, mission, brand positioning, marketing strategy, content strategy and performance, pricing, target users and audience segmentation, business processes and workflows. Throughout the course of most projects, however, we tend to simply touch on whatever is most pertinent to the business at hand.

Do I need to be an active business? Or can I still be in the idea stage?

Chevron
I prefer to work with businesses, creators and entrepreneurs that already have some flow of business. This is primarily because I will have more data to work with, and I can deliver more impactful recommendations (if you've already tried a few things, I'll be able to better help you parse the data than if you're yet to start experimenting!). That said, I'm also happy to discuss projects that require help when starting out and getting setup, or even just to test or proof an idea or concept.
