Gallery View

Notion's Gallery view is a powerful tool that allows you to display your database items as a grid of cards, each with a preview image. This is a great way to showcase your information and make it easy to browse and discover new items.

In this tutorial, we'll show you how to add and show pictures in Notion's Gallery view, and explore some of the ways you can use this feature to present and organize your information.

How To Add & Show Pictures In Notion's Gallery View

  1. Navigate to or create your gallery view.
  2. Click on the view's name and select 'Edit View'.
  3. In the view's settings, select the 'Layout' menu option.
  4. Under the 'Layout' tab, choose the card preview option you want: Page cover, Page preview, None, or the name of any Files/Media properties you have created.
  5. Click into gallery item to set the Cover image, or to attach an image file.

Step 1: Navigate to or create your gallery view

To add and show pictures in Notion's Gallery view, you'll need to navigate to or create your gallery view. If you already have a gallery view, simply click on the view's name in the tabs at the top of your database. If you don't have a gallery view yet, you can create one by clicking on the '+' icon next to any existing 'Views' in the database top tabs, and then selecting 'Gallery' from the list of layout options.

Step 2: Click 'Edit View' from the view's dropdown menu

Once you've opened your gallery view, click on the view's name and select 'Edit View' from the menu that appears. This will open the view's settings, where you can customize the way the view looks and behaves.

Step 3: Select the 'Layout >' menu

In the view's settings, select the 'Layout' tab. Here, you should already see that the layout is set to 'Gallery', and you'll be viewing the Gallery-specific settings.

Step 4: Set your 'Card preview' option

In the 'Layout' menu, you'll see an option called 'Card preview'. This option determines what information is displayed on each card in the gallery view.

To show pictures in the gallery view, you'll need to select from one of the following options:

  • Page cover: This option will use the Cover image of each page as the preview image for the card. To set a Cover image for a page, click on the page's name and select 'Cover' from the menu that appears.
  • Page preview: This option will show a snippet of the content on the actual database page. This may be text, tables, or any images you have on the page.
  • None: This option will not show any preview images on the cards.
  • The name of any Files/Media properties you have created: This option will use the first file or media item in the selected property as the preview image for the card.
Tip: Typically, Notion works better with sizing cover images than attached files, so when in doubt just go for 'Page cover' and be sure to select a Cover image for each gallery item.

Step 5: Enjoy your gallery view with pictures

Once you've chosen the option you want, head back to your gallery with the changes applied. You'll now see your gallery view with the chosen preview images displayed on each card.

And that's it! You've successfully added and shown pictures in Notion's Gallery view. This feature allows you to present and organize your information in a visually appealing way, making it easy to browse and discover new items. Enjoy!

No Pictures Showing In Notion Gallery View?

There are a few reasons your pictures may not be showing. Here are some tips to get that fixed:

  1. Follow the tutorial steps above to set your Layout 'Card preview' properly;
  2. Check to ensure a Cover Image is set for each database item in your gallery view;
  3. Check to ensure an appropriate file type is attached if you're showing images from a file property;
  4. Make sure you are referencing the intended database source in your Gallery view.

Hopefully that gets your images showing in the view as you want them :)
